To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you must have held a driving licence for at least four years and pass the three part ADI exam:
Part 1 is the computer-based theory and hazard perception; the first section consists of 100 multiple choice questions set in four groups with a score of 20 needed out of 25 in each group and an overall score required of at least 85%. In the second section you must complete a hazard perception test similar to that taken by all new drivers identifying up to 15 hazards contained in 14 video snippets but achieving 57 out of 75 to pass.
Part 2 is a test of your practical driving ability where you are only allowed 5 minor errors and no serious or dangerous faults. You must satisfy the examiner on each of the following matters:
· expert handling of the controls
· correct road procedure
· anticipation of the actions of other road users and taking appropriate action
· sound judgment of distance, speed and timing
· consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
Part 3 is an instructional ability test in which the examiner will ‘role play’ a pupil and you must rectify their faults. Firstly, the examiner will take on the role of a pupil who is a beginner with limited driving knowledge then as a more experienced pupil, usually one who is about test standard.
Only three attempts are allowed at both the Part 2 and Part 3. If you fail all three attempts you will have to start again by taking Part 1 but must wait two years from the time you first passed Part 1 before you can reapply.
